Couple this with a higher service mileage and a higher level of comfort thanks to the wider casing, and you get a tubular which is especially forgiving with today's ultra stiff racing bikes. Vectran™ Breaker Vectran is a synthetically manufactured high-tech fibre from a natural model. Like spider silk, Vectran is a liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP). Vectran is spun from melted liquid polymer Vectra and processed further to a multi-strand thread. Spider silk, like Vectran, has an enormous tear resistance at a very low weight – exactly the right properties to process into a premium Continental bike tyre as a puncture protection insert. A Vectran Breaker is lighter, more flexible and protects more effectively against cuts than the comparable nylon breaker. Vectran Breaker does not adversely affect the rolling resistance. BlackChili Compound Continental refine newly developed synthetic rubbers with natural rubber with the proven high-performance tread compound. They use these rubbers with special nanometric carbon soot particles, which are optimized in shape and surface properties for best uses for the intended tyre. BlackChili Compound reaches an unprecedented of performance. Tyres with BlackChili Compound reach an unprecedented level of performance. Compared to the previous best Activated Silica Compound, BlackChili tyres have 26% less rolling resistance, a 30 % higher friction value (grip) and a 5 % increase in mileage. TPS TyrePositioning System The narrower front tyre (22mm) provides reduced wind resistance and better handling. An adhesion-optimised tread mixture supplies the necessary grip especially for wet cornering. The wider rear tyre (24mm) offers better traction thanks to a larger contact area and at the same time more comfort. Thanks to the fast rolling, optimised tread mixture and larger contact area on the rear tyre, wear is reduced. The result is a pioneering front and rear tyre system for road racing – to be found in Conti’s GP Attack and Force tyres/tubs.

Instead of being sewed with an inner tube inside, at the end of the process beads are made by folding the casing around Aramid fibers threads. For this reason an open tubular gives very similar ride feel of that of a tubular, mainly if a latex inner tube is used. Mounting an open tubular on a wheel is the same as mounting a standard clincher but with the advantage of riding a much more comfortable and performing tyre. Built for the intensity of riding in extreme conditions, this tyre is a perfect upgrade for maximising your control during muddy conditions. Technologies: Challenge Handmade Clinchers (HCL): These Handmade Clinchers are made from the same materials and processes as our handmade tubulars but instead of sewing an inner tube inside the casing is wrapped around an aramid bead to form a tyre that fits on a clincher rim. The HCL is moulded flat, not in a horseshoe like a TLR or VCL. This shape allows the casing to naturally deform over surface imperfections and minimize rolling resistance. A tubeless tire is moulded in a U-shape to make the sidewalls rigid, so the system does not “burp” or lose air when it deforms after it encounters a surface imperfection. The tubeless tire’s stiff sidewall compromises its ability to equal a supple HCL with a latex inner tube.
This tyre features a central ramped tread profile for easily acceleration, as well as aggressive side knobs for superb grip on corners and technical trail sections. This tyre is engineered to be robust, reliable and dependable - the Grifo is a very worthy addition to your racing/training arsenal. Classed as one of the best all-around cyclocross tyres every created by Challenge, this tyre excels in wet, dry, soft packed, rocky and root-infested course conditions Technologies: Vulcanized Tubeless Ready (VTR): The highest level of performance offered by car, truck and motorcycle tyre manufacturers is a vulcanized tubeless system. While this is an old technology for cars and trucks, for bicycles it is relatively new and did not even have an internationally accepted design standard (ISO or ETRTO) until recent years. By eliminating the inner tube it is possible to lower the weight and create a softer, more comfortable, more efficient, lower rolling resistance tyre system by running lower tyre pressure. Challenge started introducing Vulcanized Tubeless Ready (VTR) tyres in recent years because the ISO and ETRTO standards for proper VTR tire and rim fit have finally been completed. These standards ensure your safety and your ability to fit and service the tyres with hand tools.
Open Tubular (Clincher) An open tubular is constructed using the same casing and tread materials and process as a tubular, but instead of sewing the casing together (closed), the sides of the tubular casing are folded around aramid fibre cords to produce beads. This ‘open’ design performs like a tubular, yet conveniently mounts like a standard clincher tyre. If combined with a Latex inner tube the ride becomes even closer to that of a tubular, offering excellent traction and cornering, low rolling resistance and shock absorption.
This tyre features a bold 120 tpi Nylon casing, vulcanised for added protection. Plus, it stands up brilliantly to the rough and tumble of such riding for a confidence-inspiring performance on every outing. Giving you fast rolling and cornering, this world-class tyre is a perfect upgrade for riders who want maximum control in all riding conditions.
