The 9 tooth cog lets you step down one chainring size while keeping the same top-end gearing and provides not only better ground clearance, but an overall lighter drivetrain. Unlike SRAM Eagle, Helix R cassettes have replaceable gear clusters. That means ongoing service and replacement costs will be less than half that of SRAM cassettes. As an added bonus, Helix R 12 speed clusters are backward compatible with and can be used to upgrade your existing TRS+ 9-50 cassette. When installing the Helix R cassette, as with any cassette, e.thirteen recommends checking chain wear. If your chain shows 0.5% or more wear, you will significantly decrease the wear life of your new cassette. Installing a new chain with your new cluster is a much better and economical solution. A 6 tooth jump is the maximum for good shifts. Q: I have a short cage dérailleur on my bike. Will that work? A: We recommend a medium or long cage dérailleur Q: Why do you only have a 42t expander cog for SRAM cassettes A: The 40t is available only for Shimano as SRAM is not offering a 34t cassette. Q: Is it hard to setup the expander cog? A: It's really not too hard, but you are working at the extreme limits of your rear dérailleur. If you have specific questions about the setup and adjustment, we recommend heading to your local bike shop. Q: I have a really worn drivetrain. Will the expander cog work ok on my bike? A: Old drivetrain components could cause poor shifting performance. We recommend a new chain and a new or well-cared for cassette.
