The Castelli Superleggera Bibshort is designed for the hottest conditions and is the latest iteration in Castellis quest to build the most lightweight bibshort. Castelli has been developing lightweight bibshorts since 2011, but when designing the Superleggera Bibshort Castelli went back to the drawing board to rethink every aspect of the shorts design. Castelli decided that what the short needs to do is hold the seat pad securely in place while adding as little weight as possible and retaining durability. The solution was to engineer a brand-new fabric that is woven rather a knit, saving 30% in weight for the same level of support. Castelli also worked with a world leading mill to create a graded fabric that becomes increasingly lighter the further down the leg it extends. At the lightest point, this fabric weighs 90g/m2 compared to normal short fabric which weighs roughly 220g/m2. The result of these new technologies is a bibshort that weighs an incredibly light 141g in size large. The fabric construction saves weight, but it really comes into its own when riding hard in hot conditions as it absorbs 30% less moisture compared to normal short fabric. This means that while the fabric saves 48g in weight when dry, it saves closer to 150g when youre sweating your way up Cols and pushing yourself to your absolute limit. The feedback we receive on our top-of-the-line gravel short is, in most cases, quite direct and positive. Those who have tried it have fallen in love with it for a number of reasons that make it our absolute favorite product for gravel races or long-distance adventures. Let’s start with the things you’ll notice immediately: two back pockets and a mesh side pocket on the left leg. We designed them because we know how important it is to have plenty of space on these occasions. Energy bars, bananas, knives, lighters, gloves, arm warmers — in recent years we’ve seen our customers put pretty much everything in those pockets! Next up, the fit: it’s a garment with a rather race-oriented approach. The first time you put it on, it will seem quite compressive due to its structure and the very important upper part that will help you on longer rides. Once you’re on the bike, though, you won’t even notice it this is the strong point of this garment. A race fit offering almost “tourist-level” comfort. The seat pad is our DMS pad, designed specifically for gravel, which combines different density levels with a smaller shape than other pads. We’ve placed and sewn it in a different position than what we use for our road shorts, to perfectly correspond to the position of the body — which is different on a gravel bike — and to the necessary movement on the roughest roads.
