Like all components in the new Tiagra range the rear derailleurs have also seen some minor changes. The derailleur gets smoothed over a little bit and again add the longer lever of the more expensive groups with the cable bolt moved past the p-knuckle pivot. The alloy body and outer link leads to lower weight without compromising strength and durability and two fluorine-coated link pin bushings offer low-friction performance. The light shift action is complemented by large 11 tooth pulleys which reduce pulley wear and chain noise. The RD-M786 rear derailleur with Shadow technology is optimised for trail riding with the addition of an innovative new friction clutch mechanism which actively prevents the derailleur cage moving forwards under tension, all but eliminating chain slap and helping to prevent chain suck and dropping, ideal for more aggressive trail riders. The tension can be removed with the used of an integrated lever which facilitates easy wheel removal and gear indexing.The familiar 'Shadow' low profile design architecture keeps the derailleur and it's pulley cage closely tucked in to prevent impact damage from trail hazards whilst also eliminating chainstay contact and trail chatter, similarly the direct cable routing prevents snagging. Whilst a modified cable pull-ratio (which requires the same pressure regardless of the position on the cassette) helps resist the effects of cable contamination to maintain shift quality for longer.
