The 9120 shifters feature a re-designed brake hood that is more comfortable to grip, especially for those with smaller hands. The shifters also offer up to 14mm of reach adjustment. The shifter hood has been slimmed down considerably from previous hydraulic STI shifters and is close in size and shape to the mechanical brake lever. The 9170 brake calipers have been tuned to perform optimally in road racing conditions. They feature the Shimano Flat Mount system for a sleek and aerodynamic profile and Ice Tech pads for improved heat dissipation.
The 9170 shifters feature an ideal ergonomic shape that is comfortable in the hand and similar in size to mechanical braking versions of the shifter. The shift paddles now also feature a more defined "click" for confidence in shifting and to prevent mis-shifts. E-Tube compatibility means that the shift paddles can be customised to suit the rider. The 9170 shifters now include Synchro-shift technology that automatically moves the rear derailleur when the front ring is changed or moves the front derailleur with the rear shifts to optimise chainline and drivetrain efficiency.
