The R7100 Shimano 12-speed cassette represents the first time 12-speed cassettes have been brought to the Japanese component maker’s 105 groupset; the groupset favored by recreational cyclists around the world. Better Shifting, More Performance: The previous R7000 model offered excellent shifting, even under load. The R7100 version has been refined further and boasts improved efficiency, quicker and smoother shifts. Thanks to trickle-down technology and Shimano using techniques honed in their top-of-the-range models, the products in the 105 range now perform comparably to the more expensive Dura-Ace and Ultegra lines. All that separates the ranges is the materials used, which add weight. But it’s the less expensive materials that enable the brand to the R7100 cassette at a more affordable price. Though the materials may be less expensive, this is not to say they are poor quality. Typically, Shimano will use heavier, harder wearing materials for the 105 range, when compared to the top-tier models. What you can expect is a cassette that is built to withstand and perform in the elements. How Many Teeth?: Available as 12-speed, in a ratio of 11-34T, this cassette is perfect for tackling those big days on the bike. Paired with a compact chainset up front, even the steepest of gradients should be conquerable. With an extra gear to play with, from the previous model, you won’t sacrifice a sprocket further down the block either; so you’ll have no problem keeping up in your fast bunch rides. Shimano’s Ultegra range is race focused, but at a more affordable price than the top-tier Dura-Ace line. The R8000 offers 11 sprockets and is available in a broad range of ratios, so whether it’s a tightly packed 11–25-tooth block for time trialing or a wide ranging 11–32-tooth for conquering even the most epic climbs, there’s something for everyone. Tough, Lightweight, Durable Machined from a combination of aluminum and steel, an Ultegra R8000 cassette offers an excellent compromise between weight, durability, and performance. To keep the weight down aluminium is used to rivet the largest three sprockets and a fibre-reinforced composite the next largest two. Tipping the scales at a low of 232 grams for the 11–25T, and a high of 300g for the 14–28T option, regardless of your preferred choice you certainly won’t be weighed down. But, not only is this cassette lightweight and high performing, it is also durable. Corrosion resistance comes via the nickel-plated steel sprockets, so you can ride without the worry your cassette will disintegrate at the sight of rain.
