That isn’t to say comfort and practicality have been sacrificed though. Shimano’s Deore 12 speed mountain bike gears utilise a colossal range 10-51 tooth cassette, adapted for hybrid use with a 44 tooth FSA Gossamer 1X chainset. This combination offers ratios for both spinning up steep hills, and a big top gear for high speed cruising and descending, without significant gaps in between. These ratios give the same range as a 50/34t road compact chainset with an 11-32 cassette but without the complexity of a front derailleur.
