It is a water emulsion of natural waxy compounds, with the right viscosity to penetrate inside the chain links, where lubrication is most important. Once the water has evaporated, a thick layer of wax remains firmly anchored to the metal, creating a real anti-friction pad.The chain will not be dry to the touch - given the layer of wax that also protects the outside - but it will not be greasy or sticky and will not retain dirt.First ApplicationWax emulsions require a deep cleaning of the chain before they can be applied the first time. It is essential to remove any oily traces so that the emulsion comes in contact with the metal and can deposit a well-adhering layer of wax.The thing is very simple using Effetto Mariposa's Allpine Extra - an excellent degreaser designed for this purpose - and the Mangiacatena chain cleaner, equipped with rotating brushes. Thanks to these products it is not necessary to disassemble the chain to clean it thoroughly. In that way, however, a lot of solvent is wasted without getting to a deep cleaning, unless you want to disassemble the chain and immerse it in the solvent. To avoid disassembly and clean in depth, we have developed Mangiacatena: the best cleaning with the least amount of solvent, in a short time, leaving the chain on the bike.Please Note: Reducing the amount of solvent used doesn't mean that cleaning takes place without getting dirty. Better to protect the floor with a cloth or work outside.Deep Cleaning FormulaThe chain runs straight inside Mangiacatena, squeezed at both ends between lamellar plastic (PE) elements with the task of keeping as much solvent inside as possible. The washing is performed by six rotating brushes, continuously soaked in the cleaning liquid, which actively remove dirt on each side, pushing the solvent inside the chain.Instructions for Use: Open Mangiacatena by removing the cover and positioning the lower part of Mangiacatena on the bottom span of the chain Mount the cover making sure it's perfectly aligned with the lower part, then slide the locking handle in place until it is fully engaged Add the degreasing liquid through the upper holes (it is recommended to use Effetto Mariposa Allpine Extra) until the lower tank is full to the “FILL” level line Keeping Mangiacatena in position with the side handle, pedal backwards for at least 10 full revolutions Note: the two lamellar elements at both ends reduce the waste of solvent, but slow down the sliding of the chain at least in the initial phase… so don't be afraid, just hold the Mangiacatena firmly Note: thanks to the lamellar elements, Mangiacatena allows - without wasting solvent - to pedal in both directions. To do this, it is recommended keeping the rear wheel of the bicycle off the ground (using a workshop stand or other support) It is now possible to move Mangiacatena: release the side locking handle by depressing the thumb lever and remove it, open the cover, disassemble Mangiacatena from the lower span of the chain and position it, as already described, on the upper span of the chain, for a second cleaning step. Add more degreaser if necessary Keeping Mangiacatena in position using the side handle, pedal backwards for at least 10 full revolutions Disassemble Mangiacatena and empty the liquid contained inside (dispose of in accordance with the law if you use non-biodegradable degreasers or lubricants) Water rinse: mount Mangiacatena on the lower span of the chain, add water through the top holes and make at least 10 full revolutions Disassemble Mangiacatena and empty the liquid contained inside (dispose of in accordance with the law if you use non-biodegradable degreasers or lubricants). Repeat from point 8 until perfect rinsing. Liquid sealant spreads while riding without creating wheel unbalance, but it will interfere with static balancing.Place the wheel on a truing stand and make sure it can rotate freely.With a gentle push, make the wheel spin. After a few complete rotations in the direction of the push, the wheel will enter a pendulum phase where it makes partial rotations, back and forth. Behaving like a pendulum, the excess of weight on the wheel is subject to a restoring force (due to gravity) that accelerates it toward the equilibrium position. Amplitude of swings will reduce until the wheel stops: the lowest point is where the excess weight is.Often wheels stop with the valve at the lowest point… but sometimes uneven weight distribution on the tyre or less-than-accurate carbon fiber lay up overcompensate that, and the lowest point is not corresponding to the valve.Keeping the lowest point of the rim/tyre as reference, identify the opposite point on the rim (you can find it using a ruler, aligned with the lowest point and the wheel axle) and adhere a Shelter washer there.Repeat the process from #1. Each time the heaviest point may move slightly (because of friction in the hub), but it will normally remain within a +-10 cm (4 inches) range.The wheel is balanced when, upon making it turn, IT WILL STOP WITHOUT ENTERING THE PENDULUM PHASE (it won’t change its rotation sense). With each subsequent spin, the lowest point when the wheel stops is a random point on the circumference, changing every time and depending on bearing friction.Washers can be adhered one on top of the other, or side by side, on top of the rim or on its side (depending on rim profile/size).A good trick, although not always possible, is finding a spoke that’s close to the lightest point of the wheel and cutting the washer on one side, so that the washer can be put around the spoke.Each Shelter washer weights around 1 g. Typical wheel unbalance ranges from 4 to 12 grams.Visco-elasticity reduces vibrations:That’s an added bonus when balancing a wheel with Shelter washers.The transmission of vibrational energy through any structure can be reduced by introducing visco-elastic materials at discrete points. While the bigger, more common 3.5mm Plug is great for bigger punctures on mtb tyres, several times a 1.5mm Plug is enough for smaller damages or road/gravel Tyres: having both available is simply better. The somehow bad reputation of 1.5mm plugs, unable to fix punctures, is due to the common mistake of using these small Plugs with big Forks… opening the hole more than size of the plug. The tiny, dedicated Fork of Tappabuco 1.5 prevents this occurrence.
