It's fair to say that we've been working on this short for the past 15 years. That's how long it's been since the original Free Aero Race Bibshort was first introduced, initially as our top-of-the-line race short. The concept is quite simple: start with the best pad we know how to make, surround it with a supportive short with good muscle compression, and then remove everything else that's not absolutely necessary. WARMER CONDITIONS This is our base layer for the warmest conditions. The mesh is open to create a space on the skin for sweat to evaporate. The 10% elastane content makes it very stretchy and helps in the moisture retention so that you're always getting evaporative cooling. WHAT IT IS Our lightest and airiest base layer wicks moisture away from your skin, while the open mesh helps hold the jersey up and away from the skin. It's good for warm conditions, and some riders even like it on a hot day, as it allows airflow between the jersey and skin. When Castelli engineered the first aero jersey for road racing back in 2006, everyone thought we were crazy. Back then, aero was only for TTs. Performance clothing meant moisture management. And you could win the Tour de France with a baggy jersey that was little more than a polyester T-shirt. Even our aerodynamic consultants expected limited gains, so we named the jersey Split Second, though, like now, we thought even small gains were worth pursuing. In the end the gains were pretty substantial, and we completely revolutionized the look of the pro peloton. We're now on the sixth major revision of our aero jersey.
